Risperidone Risperidone (Generic Risperdal®) is in a class of medications called atypical antipsychotics. It works by changing the activity of certain natural substances in the brain. Risperidone works by blocking the receptors in the
brain that dopamine acts on. This prevents the excessive activity of dopamine and helps to control schizophrenia. Risperidone is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of behavior problems in older adults with
dementia. Usage, Directions, Indication and Instructions Risperidone is used to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia (a mental illness that causes disturbed or unusual thinking, loss of interest in life, and strong or inappropriate emotions) in

children 10 years of age and older with bipolar disorder (manic depressive disorder; a disease that causes episodes of depression, episodes of mania, and other abnormal moods). Risperidone is also used to treat behavior problems such as aggression,
self-injury, and sudden mood changes in teenagers and children 5-16 years of age who have autism (a condition that causes repetitive behavior, difficulty interacting with others, and problems with communication). Adverse Reactions, Precautions and
Warning Older adults with dementia may also have a greater chance of having a stroke or mini-stroke during treatment. Risperidone may cause children to gain more weight than expected and for boys and male adolescents to have an increase in the size
of their breasts. You should know that risperidone may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting when you get up too quickly from a lying position. This is more common when you first start taking risperidone. If you suddenly stop taking
risperidone, your symptoms may return and your illness may become harder to treat. Do not drink alcohol while taking risperidone. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how this medication affects you. Tell your doctor your medical
history and inform your doctor all the medications you are currently on and have had previously taken. This medication is not recommended for use by patients during pregnancy and by nursing mothers and should not be used if you are allergic to one
or any of its ingredients. Risperidone may cause other side effects. Call your doctor immediately if you have any unusual problems while taking this medication. Dosage and Administration It is usually taken once or twice a day with or without food.
